22 July Memorial Grove
Our proposal is for a 22 July memorial grove, one that incorporates the dark and the difficult, the things that we’ll never forget. It will embody a frozen landscape, the time that stopped that day.
But the grove will also seek to provide warmth and optimism. It will be a good place to visit, a place where we can experience something growing, flourishing, and getting bigger and bigger. It will embody the time to come.
The memorial grove seeks a balance between the permanent and the fragile – the things that must be nurtured, protected, and showered with love, every day and at all times, without painful memories being hidden away or forgotten.

Henning Sunde (born 1977) is the co‑founder and creative director of Rodeo Architects, an architectural firm with offices in Oslo and Gothenburg. Sunde has championed the philosophy that designing our surroundings requires a range of perspectives in order to respond to the needs of individuals and society. As a result, Rodeo employs a mix of architects, urban planners, landscape architects, and various social scientists with backgrounds in sociology, social geography, and environmental psychology. The firm is currently working on many of Norway’s most innovative projects, such as the new Grønlikaia neighbourhood in Oslo, Oslo Horizon, the new NRK complex at Ensjø, and the new Unity Arena at Fornebu. Sunde has also initiated Byens Tak (“the City Roof”), a venue for architecture and urban culture on the top-floor premises of the Folketeater building in Oslo.
Hanne Tyrmi (born 1954) is a Norwegian visual artist who has exhibited several times at leading national and international institutions. In her art, Tyrmi explores many different sculptural expressions, techniques, and materials, including numerous monumental installations. Her works are characterized by how they use physical intimacy and sensory elements to communicate with the viewer. Tyrmi was awarded a Rune Brynestad Memorial Grant in 2022. In conjunction with an exhibition at Kunstnernes Hus, a documentary film was made about Tyrmi, which won Nordic Docs 2023.
Rainer Stange (born 1964) is one of Scandinavia’s leading architects and is the co‑founder of Bokemo, an architectural and landscape architectural firm based in Oslo. A highly experienced architect, he specializes in urban spaces and parks with a high degree of complexity and interdisciplinarity. Stange has overseen several major Norwegian landscape projects, such as Karl Johans Gate, Carl Berners Plass, Dronning Eufemias Gate, and Klosterenga (Sculpture) Park in Oslo and many other icons of Norwegian landscape architecture.
